Works underway to improve safety at prominent Toowoomba intersection

A major safety upgrade of the busy Anzac Avenue and Russell and West Streets intersection in Toowoomba, is underway to improve safety and accessibility for all road users.

The works being undertaken by Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC), are scheduled to continue through to October, weather and construction conditions permitting.

TRC Construction and Maintenance portfolio spokesperson Cr Carol Taylor said the improvements were designed to enhance safety at one of the city's prominent intersections.

"This intersection is used by thousands of motorists, pedestrians and cyclists every day, and these upgrades have been carefully planned to improve safety and visibility for everyone who travels through the area," Cr Taylor said.

"The project includes reconstruction of pram ramps and pedestrian crossings, roadway resurfacing and new line marking to create a safer and more accessible intersection."

Cr Taylor said vegetation within the centre of the roundabout would also be removed to improve sight lines for motorists.

"Removing the trees from the centre island will provide greater visibility for drivers approaching and travelling through the roundabout, which is an important part of the overall safety improvements," she said.

To minimise impacts on road users during the day, construction activities are being undertaken overnight between 6pm and 6am from Sunday to Thursday nights.

Council advises residents and motorists to expect some construction noise, lighting and dust during the works period.

Traffic management measures will be in place throughout construction, including temporary road closures and detours.

From August 9 to August 26, night works will involve the closure of one approach to the intersection at a time. It is anticipated that a series of two nights of intersection closures will occur in both late August and early October

Local access to properties within closure areas will be maintained, with traffic controllers on site to assist residents and manage vehicle movements through the work zone. Through traffic will be detoured during closure periods.

Cr Taylor thanked the community for its patience while the upgrades are completed.

"We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of nearby residents, businesses and road users while these important works are carried out," Cr Taylor said.

"While there will be some short-term inconvenience during construction, the long-term outcome will be a safer intersection that better serves our growing community."

Council will issue further information ahead of the planned full intersection closures through direct mail and social media.

The project is funded through the Australian Government's Black Spot Program.
