Correct disposal of asbestos and asbestos containing materials is crucial to the safety of our staff and community. Fees apply to the domestic disposal of asbestos.
Where to dispose of asbestos
Domestic disposal of asbestos and asbestos containing materials up to 175kg per load is accepted at the Greater Toowoomba Waste Management Facility.
Removal regulations
It is against the law for anyone to remove more than 10 square metres of asbestos from a home or other non‑workplace unless they have a current asbestos removal certificate under the Public Health Regulation 2018 (Qld).
Our waste services staff must pass on any information about asbestos disposal to other internal teams responsible for enforcing these laws.
Safe disposal
Follow the safety guidelines detailed on the Queensland Government asbestos website.
There are two options when disposing of asbestos and asbestos containing materials:
- Double bag it in plastic bags that are at least 200 micron thick with each bag securely sealed with adhesive tape e.g. duct tape, and ensure that each package or bag is no more than 1200mm long and 900mm wide.
- Double wrap it in 200 micron plastic with each layer securely sealed with adhesive tape, e.g. duct tape. There are no maximum dimensions for wrapped packages.
Ensure that each bag or package:
- is clearly labelled to identify it as asbestos
- remains securely sealed during transport and handling
- that damage to the packaging and dust inhalation is avoided
- can be easily and safely manually handled by the customer or, for larger packages, the customer and one other person. Our staff are unable to provide assistance when unloading.
Asbestos from commercial customers
We don't accept asbestos or asbestos containing materials from commercial customers. Commercial customers are required to find an alternative location for asbestos disposal.
Electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) includes household electrical appliances and electronic items such as desktop computers, monitors, mobile phones, printers, televisions, scanners and video game consoles.
Electrical and electronic waste can be dropped off for recycling at all our waste management facilities. Numerous retailers also participate in various recycling programs.

The Greater Toowoomba Waste Management Centre is the regional collection point for Paintback, the national product stewardship scheme for architectural and decorative paints. Domestic and commercial customers can drop off up to 100L, per vehicle per visit, of architectural and decorative paint products or packaging for recycling or responsible disposal.
For more information on Paintback, including accepted and non-accepted products, visit the Paintback website.
We don't accept:
- non-architectural or decorative paint products from commercial customers
- more than 20L of paint and 5L of thinners or solvents per visit from domestic customers.
Safety
On arrival at a facility, if paint or solvents are leaking, please inform one of our staff and we will place the leaking container into a 20L drum.
If you bring an unlabelled container, please inform a staff member. They will help identify its contents or determine what it was used for and ensure it is correctly labelled.
Waste motor oil, from a domestic source only, is accepted at most staffed waste facilities. You can dispose of 20L per visit. Visit Waste facilities opening hours, locations and accepted waste to check waste acceptance details.
Not accepted
We won't accept:
- cooking, transmission and hydraulic oils or fluids
- waste oils from commercial enterprises.
Household chemicals
At many of our waste management facilities, we offer disposal to domestic customers for household chemicals. Check waste acceptance details for your local waste facility before arriving. Visit Waste facilities opening hours, locations and accepted waste.

Agricultural and veterinary chemicals
ChemClear is a widely recognised national program that manages the risks associated with obsolete and unwanted agricultural and veterinary chemicals (agvet chemicals). The program provides a safe, effective and convenient path for users to dispose of their unwanted agvet chemicals. The ChemClear program encourages farmers and other agvet chemical users to clean up their farms and chemical stores to ensure sound environmental practices and register unused and unknown chemicals for collection and safe disposal.
Scheduled collections
Collections occur approximately every two to three years.
How to register to be involved
- Register unwanted chemicals on the ChemClear website or via the ChemClear phone hotline on 1800 008 182.
- ChemClear will notify all registered users of collection locations and dates.
Ash that isn’t completely cold can start a fire and cause serious damage at your local waste facility or in your wheelie bin. Even if a container feels cool on the outside, the inside may still be hot enough to reignite.
Before you handle ash:
- make sure ashes and burnt material are cold all the way through before disposal
- soak the ash in water, then leave it for a few days to dry
- never put warm ash in your plastic wheelie bin as it can melt the bin and start a fire.
When disposing of ash at a waste facility, always follow the directions of on-site staff.
