Iconic Toowoomba mural refreshed to reflect resilience

A landmark mural in Toowoomba's CBD has been refreshed to tell a new chapter in the region's story of resilience, recovery and preparedness following Cyclone Alfred.

Created by award-winning street artist Matt Adnate in collaboration with Indigenous social enterprise Adapt Mentorship, the updated artwork retains the much-loved original portrait of a young First Nations boy while introducing new elements that reflect the community's experience during and after the disaster.

The mural's expanded background features a cyclone-inspired sky, birds emerging from the storm and flowing water forms, symbolising the impact of Cyclone Alfred while celebrating renewal, recovery and the region's capacity to move forward together.

Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor Geoff McDonald said the refreshed mural was a powerful reflection of community spirit.

"This artwork captures the strength, resilience and determination of our community," Mayor McDonald said.

"The original mural has become an iconic part of Toowoomba's streetscape, and this refresh respectfully builds on that legacy while acknowledging an important chapter in our region's history.

"The new elements recognise the challenges our community faced during Cyclone Alfred, while also highlighting the hope, recovery and preparedness that have emerged in its aftermath.

"Public art has a unique ability to tell our stories and bring people together, and this mural serves as a lasting reminder of how our community responds in times of adversity.

"It demonstrates that while challenges may shape us, they also strengthen our connections and our commitment to supporting one another."

The refreshed mural transforms an already celebrated artwork into a visual reminder of the community's ability to unite during times of crisis and prepare for future disasters, while remaining recognisably the same work that residents and visitors have embraced.

Located on the Youth Justice building at 49 Neil Street, the mural was completed this week.

The mural refresh was made possible through the Australian and Queensland governments jointly funded Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
