Storm season can arrive quickly, and taking a few simple steps now can help households and businesses be better prepared when severe weather occurs. Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is encouraging residents and businesses to understand how overland flow could affect their property, neighbourhood and how they move about and to take practical steps to prepare before storm season. During rainfall, water travels across the ground on its way to a drain, creek or river. During intense events this can have impacts on how we move around streets, use parks and can impact our backyards and other low-lying areas. TRC Transport and Drainage portfolio spokesperson Councillor Trevor Manteufel said knowing how water may move through a local area was one of the most practical ways the community could prepare. “Overland flow can affect places well away from creeks and rivers, which is why it is important for residents and business should take the time to understand their local risk,” Cr Manteufel said. “A few simple actions before heavy rain arrives can help reduce impacts. This includes keeping drains, gutters and natural flow paths clear, maintaining drainage around your property and direct water away from buildings where possible. “Preparing for severe weather is a shared responsibility. Taking the time to understand local conditions, make a plan and stay informed can help people respond more effectively when severe weather occurs.” Residents can subscribe to Council’s Disaster Dashboard for alerts and updates and visit Council’s overland flow webpage for information, resources and practical preparedness advice.
