Referrals for building work

Certain types of building work need a Referral Agency Response, or Referral assessment by us or a building certifier.

Under the Planning Regulation 2017 (Qld), you may need a referral for one or more of the following aspects of your building work:

• amenity and aesthetic impact of building work on the proposed development area
• boundary setbacks, building height and car parking areas
• building close to an infrastructure
• removal or relocation of a building
• site coverage.

This is not a complete list. Determining if a referral is required is complicated. You should always contact us for advice about approvals and assessments, or speak to a building certifier.

If you do need to make a referral to us to consider, you can submit the application either:

• by a private building certifier as part of a building approval
• or as a preliminary approval before applying for the building approval.

How to submit a referral

You can submit a referral online, by email or in person. Provide as much detail as possible in your application, including supporting reasons for your request.
