Sewer connection

Connecting to the sewer system ensures proper wastewater disposal and compliance with Council regulations, which helps protect public health and the environment. You may need a sewer connection when:

  • building a new home or commercial property
  • upgrading from a septic system
  • replacing old or damaged pipes
  • making major renovations that add bathrooms or kitchens. 

Who can do sewer connection work

Sewer connections to Council infrastructure can only be installed by Council staff. Any additional plumbing work on your property must be completed by a licensed plumber with the relevant approvals.

For drainage into stormwater, you must apply through an Operational Works Application.

Application requirements

You must submit a Plumbing and Drainage Application to Council before any sewer connection work begins.

A private works quote from Council is required if the Council sewer is located outside of the property boundary.

Plans required

Residential sewered properties:

  • Site plan showing boundaries, street frontages, and rainwater tank location
  • Hydraulic plan with scale bar showing fixtures, Overflow Relief Gullies (ORG), vents, inspection openings, vent stack, and sub-meter location.

Commercial sewered properties:

  • Hydraulic plan showing all fixtures and water systems
  • Trade waste details if applicable.

Safety and compliance

Excavations for stub connections must meet Workplace Health & Safety Code of Practice – 2013, Chapter 6 requirements. Council will inspect before connection.

Sewer stub connections will only occur after:

  • excavation is completed and inspected by the Coordinator Water & Sewer (or delegate)
  • excavation meets the Workplace Health & Safety Code of Practice – 2013, Chapter 6 requirements.

Council will conduct a site visit after excavation and before stub connection works begin. Works cannot proceed unless all safety and compliance requirements are met.
