Rosalie Gallery photography exhibition a glimpse into hidden cosmos
Published on 18 June 2026
Residents can view spectacular elements of the hidden cosmos from the comfort of Goombungee’s Rosalie Gallery when Paul Knie’s exhibition, Photographing the Night Sky, is displayed from June 24 to July 26, 2026.
Paul took all the images that showcase the vivid colours and intricate features of the moon, sun, distant nebulae, galaxies and other celestial objects from the Toowoomba Region using consumer-grade equipment, demonstrating how accessible astrophotography has become.
Although most deep sky objects are invisible to the unaided eye, modern imaging allows us to collect their faint light and reveal details beyond natural perception. Scientific imaging is integral to this work.
This exhibition combines true colour and false colour palettes, assigning hues to wavelengths that the human eye cannot detect.
These techniques reveal the chemical signatures of gases and dust, bringing hidden structures and processes into view.
Paul first became fascinated with the stars in his early teens using a small home-made telescope.
Today, Paul has a variety of telescopes and purpose-built astronomy cameras. Each one of these has dedicated functions, such as capturing the moon and planets, and others more suited for faint nebula and galaxies.
As a member of the Astronomical Association of Queensland, Paul shares his interest and access to specialised equipment such as telescopes designed specifically for imaging the Sun.
Although Paul has formal qualifications in photography and has worked in commercial photography, he is now retired and volunteers his time as a tutor.
Paul invites residents to step outside after dark and rediscover the infinite, glorious heavens above, reminding us that: “The sky is not the limit”.
The exhibition’s Artist in Conversation event starts at 11am on Saturday, June 27, 2026.
