Joining the library

Library membership is available free to any resident of Queensland who is able to provide proof of their residential address. A fee is payable for anyone with permanent residence outside of Queensland wishing to join the library.

You can join in person at any of our library branches by presenting proof of your name and current address. There is no minimum age for joining, but those under the age of 16 years require a signature from their parent or guardian.

Online membership

An online membership provides access to our electronic resources such as eBooks and eAudiobooks, eMagazines, eComics, eMusic, video streaming services, online learning platforms, online databases and more. Online memberships are free and you can join here

Number of items able to be borrowed

Members may borrow a maximum of 20 items, this can be a combination of items such as books, magazines, DVD, CDs or CD Books.

Loan periods for library items

The general loan period is 28 days.

Borrowing without your library card

You may borrow using your library card or any photo ID. Please take care of your card and don't lend it to another person, as the owner of the card is responsible for items issued with it.

If you lose your card, please notify the library immediately. A new card can be issued at a cost of $1.00 (inc.GST).

Changing home address

Members are able to change their contact details and address online. Alternatively, ask for a change of address form the next time you are at your local library or call us on 4688 6670 and we can do it over the phone for you.

How to return books when the library is closed

All of our libraries have a returns chute which enables borrowed items to be returned out of hours, except on public holidays. All libraries are closed on public holidays and don't accept library material returns for the duration of the public holiday period.

Overdue fines

If library items are significantly overdue, we will either phone you at home or mail an overdue notice to you but the responsibility is always on you to return the books on time and in good condition.

If you fail to return the overdue items, the matter is referred to our finance branch who issue an account for the replacement cost of the books. Failure to return the books and pay the administration fee may result in legal action.

Accessing items from libraries we don't own

If you are a library member, we can attempt to find items we do not hold in other libraries. Some charges may apply for this service. We will check with you first to see if you would like us to proceed sourcing the item.

Renewing items

Automatic loan renewals

Where possible, our library system will now automatically renew your loans. Three days before the due date, our system will check to see if your item doesn't have other customers waiting and if possible, your loan will be renewed. Most of our physical items may be renewed up to 2 times. Items that have reservations pending will not be eligible for an automatic renewal. Any items that cannot be automatically renewed will appear on the loan reminder notice that is sent by email.

To manually renew your loans

You can renew an item yourself by logging into the library catalogue. Alternatively, loans that you wish to be renewed should be taken to the issues counter with the other items you wish to borrow and indicate to the staff which item(s) you wish to renew.

Renewals can also be made by telephone. If the items are not overdue they may be renewed online by logging onto the catalogue using your ID (library barcode number) and PIN (last four digits of your phone number) to access your personal details. Please ensure you have the item(s) and your library card on hand.

Reserving items

You may reserve any item that is currently on loan to another borrower by asking at the enquiries counter. Please bring your library card with you. You can also reserve items online using the library's catalogue or MyTRlibrary app

When an item you have reserved is returned to the library, you will be advised by email, telephone or mail that the item is being held for you at the library for one week. There is no charge for this service.
