If you have been allocated a rural address, this will become your official address to be used for all purposes. Lot numbers and mail service numbers are no longer accepted. Property owners are advised of their official address following receipt of an application.

Rural addressing is a simple, straight-forward means of identifying, locating and addressing properties in rural areas throughout Australia. It is based on a national standard, but implemented locally through Councils. Rural addressing is being applied in our Council area to any property where it is not logical to allocate an urban street address.

A policy has been developed to provide a consistent framework for the rural and urban addressing of all properties within our jurisdiction.  By adopting and displaying the rural or urban number allocated to a property, owners will be unambiguously identifiable and readily locatable by emergency service responders and service delivery providers.

To apply for a rural or urban address, please complete the application form for rural or urban addressing in related documents.  There is no application fee.

Difficulties in locating rural properties have been accepted as a part of rural life for too long and rural addressing provides a consistent and logical solution.  Local knowledge, lot numbers and property names have been relied on until now, creating an unreliable system for emergency services, mail delivery, public utilities and visitors to the area.

Rural addressing measurement system

Rural addressing is a distance-based measurement system. It allocates each rural property with a unique address based on the distance of the property entrance from an assigned point. In the case of minor roads, the assigned point is the intersection with a major road. For major state controlled roads, such as the New England Highway, the assigned point is the starting point of the road as designated by the Department of Main Roads. Numbering is continuous for the full length of the road, irrespective of local authority boundaries.
