New trees with green tree guards

We aim to make our Toowoomba Region a liveable and sustainable place for generations to come. A place to live, work and play or visit.

Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations (UN) has created the Sustainable Development Goals. These goals set out the changes needed to make a cleaner and greener world. We have put together an overview of what changes we are making within our Region.

What we are doing

  • Upgrading water & wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Creating smart catchment & stormwater management strategies to improve biodiversity.
  • Devising plans to protect areas of high ecological significance.
  • Implementing a Green Infrastructure Strategy.
  • Using a planning scheme that supports large-scale renewable energy projects.
  • Implementing the Sustainable Transport Strategy, Open Space Strategy and Public Transport provision.

What we are working towards

  • Aiming to include expected increases of flood and stormwater into our modelling for future planning.
  • Developing a climate risk management strategy.
  • Looking into a climate responsive design guidelines to inform new home regulations, increasing energy efficiency and resilience to climate change.
  • Exploring ways to reduce fuel consumption.

Strategies that are shaping our community

Toowoomba’s Green Infrastructure Strategy sets the direction and actions needed to support how green infrastructure is valued, protected, and enhanced across the Toowoomba Region.

Open Space is open and freely accessible public space ranging from highly structured tree lined streets and formal parkland to unstructured bushland reserves. The Open Space Strategy maps out a vision for the open spaces across our expansive region. It will deliver a connected and distinctive open space network that will enhance the unique character of each locality.

The Sustainable Transport Strategy guides our transport policy, integrated land use and transport planning, and future transport investment decisions. Under this vision, the increased use of public transport and active transport will lead to reduced levels of traffic congestion and improved equity of access for all.

The Toowoomba Region population is approximately 165,000 and is expected to grow to 205,000 by 2036. With growing population comes increased waste generation and landfill challenges.  As a region, we want to reduce the amount of waste going into landfill. The Waste Management Strategy is our opportunity to make a difference.

The Waste Infrastructure Plan deals with how service levels are achieved to support resource recovery over landfill disposal and sets the principles for how we will transform the way waste is managed. Successful delivery of the plan will ensure that we provide cost-effective and user-friendly waste management and resource recovery opportunities to the whole community.

The Street Tree Masterplan provides guidance for the selection of street trees in a wide range of towns throughout the Toowoomba Regional Council area.

The recommendations provided are based on knowledge of street trees and urban design principles, taking into account particular aspects of the Toowoomba Region. These aspects include biophysical factors that affect trees, both currently and in the future.

Trees in urban environments provide a variety of benefits and play an important role to reduce:

  • the urban heat island effect
  • wind speeds
  • solar radiation
  • greenhouse gas emissions
  • energy use
