Our State (Heart Foundation) and National (Parks & Leisure Australia) award-winning Change Project provides residents of Toowoomba Region with a wide range of low-cost activities, encouraging everyone to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. The program provides activities to suit a wide variety of fitness levels. Click on the headings below to explore activities.

INVIGOR8 TR Project 

The Everyone’s Game (sport done differently) Initiative will fund 8 already suitably qualified coaches to trial a social sports program that will allow for members of the community to participate in a program where no uniforms or skills are required, they can pay as they go, meet new people while learning a new sport and most importantly have bucket loads of fun.

The Initial 12 session program can be designed based on each individual sport in partnership with Council. All sports are welcome to apply if they can meet the criteria. The intent behind the funding is to get more people trialling different sports that would otherwise see competitive sports as a barrier to exercise (i.e. cost, feeling that they don’t fit in, having to wear a uniform, commit to a full season, lack of experience etc.)

Coaches/suitably qualified instructors will need to:

  • hold suitable qualifications (i.e. certificate in coaching, blue card etc.)
  • have insurance or the ability to utilise suitable insurance (eg local football club or Football Qld)
  • source volunteers to assist (depending on numbers)
  • organise the administration of running the program (registrations, payment, forms, safety etc.)
  • run a regular (weekly/fortnightly) 12 session program during the funding timeframe (ends July 2022)
  • actively participate in any promotional/media opportunities, evaluation of the project or other reporting of the project for grant purposes.

In return the coach/program will:

  • receive $50 per session (max 12 sessions)
  • have the potential to retain income from participant fees (max $5 per participant)
  • receive a sports pack to the value of $250 at the start of the program's commencement (i.e. markers, balls, bibs etc.)
  • receive venue support (i.e. park hire, field use etc.)
  • receive promotional support to advertise the program
  • have the potential to bring new members into the associated club if participants decide they love the sport and want to join the club.

Applicants will be assessed against the following key criteria and priority given to:

  • those geographical areas where there are currently no suitable coaches/ qualified instructors offering regular, low-cost sessions
  • applicants from regional townships
  • applicants with relevant experience/knowledge in the industry
  • applicants who are passionate and community-minded
  • applicants who have the capacity to run the program in the funding timeframe (by July 2022).

Funding has been secured through the Active Kit Grant Program through the Queensland Government. The Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport is working in collaboration with Health and Wellbeing Queensland on this initiative, with co-investment across agencies to support more Queenslanders lead healthy and active lifestyles.

Highfields

Tone it up 

Strengthen and tone your whole body through gentle Pilates style movements. This class incorporates bodyweight exercises but resistance bands are also utilised to increase the intensity and add variety. Dynamic and static stretching is built into each workout to increase flexibility and range of motion thus improving the overall function of your body.

Boxing for fitness will give you a high-intensity workout at the same time as utilising bodyweight resistance training methods for a full-body cardio and strength session. This form of exercise is easy to learn and suitable for all fitness levels. Ian is an experienced trainer with a military background and values exercise for both positive physical health and more importantly mental health and enjoys being a positive role model for others.

Boogie bounce

Inclusive autistic exercise class 

Boxercise is a total body workout, allowing you to directly stimulate all of your muscles in a fun, energetic and inclusive environment surrounded by like-minded people. The benefits of this class can go far beyond the physical, allowing you to improve your hand-eye coordination, motor skills, reaction times and agility, therefore, increasing your overall fitness and health.

Boxercise will involve shadow-boxing, skipping, hitting pads, kicking punchbags, press-ups, shuttle-runs & core exercises. This class is open to all fitness levels and you can participate at your own pace as you build confidence and strength. Classes are open for children from the age of seven right through to seniors. This class is run by an experienced trainer who has seen and experienced life as an autistic person and father and is empowering others to not let life hold them back.

Billy's Buddies ball sports program (2 to 6 years)

Billy’s Buddies is a well-structured non-contact ball sports program designed for kids aged between 2 and 6 years. The program emphasises having fun and encouraging children to develop their social skills and learn the fundamentals of not only rugby league but ball sports in general. Teamwork is the cornerstone of the activities. All sessions are run by Toowoomba Billy's Buddies Coach - Brianna.

Ready to go from the couch to 5km? Parkuns are a free, weekly community event where everyone is welcome to come along for a 5km walk, jog or run. Perfect for people of all fitness abilities, there is no time limit and no one finishes last! Each week, runs are coordinated by an enthusiastic and dedicated group of volunteers and everyone is welcome to stick around for a coffee and chat afterwards. To help measure your progress towards achieving your health and fitness goals, parkrun also provides the option for your runs to be timed each week and to keep track of your number of parkruns completed.

Food as medicine program - Expression of Interest

Do you want to learn how to be healthy, reach your goals and get the most out of the nutrients in your food? If so, this course is for you! Join accredited Nutritionist Lyn for her four week ‘Food as Medicine’ nutrition course coming soon in 2022 (if enough interest is shown). This course will provide tips on how to make food work for you and have all nutrition your questions answered. 

Topics previously covered were:

How the body digests food, why it is important to eat fruit and vegetables and why you need those eight glasses of water a day
Cooking with pantry staples, meal planning and understanding portion sizes 
Label reading, what to shop for, hidden nasties
Immune health, using food to keep you healthy

A Better Choice initiative

The Change Project has pioneered a new way of delivering the ‘A Better Choice’ healthy eating initiative. This initiative is designed to make it easier for our community to make healthy choices when dining out at cafes, restaurants, vans, takeaway, vending machines and other food outlets across the Region. Based on Queensland Health’s ‘A Better Choice’ guidelines' traffic light system (green – choose mostly, amber – choose carefully and red – choose rarely), the initiative aims to empower food outlet operators to put health on their menu and contribute to community health and wellbeing.

Make a difference to community health and wellbeing while boosting your bottom-line with the ‘A Better Choice’ initiative!

  • work with a health professional to undertake an initial menu assessment at your venue
  • work with and be supported by a health professional to determine and implement small steps over time
  • provide feedback and assist with evaluating the program.

What you receive completely free:

  • menu assessment by a health professional
  • program toolkit (includes stickers, flyers, posters)
  • healthy eating advisory service (for ongoing support by a health professional)
  • promotion of your business/organisation through Council’s Change Project.

Taking small steps towards creating a healthy food environment are easy to make with A Better Choice! Why you should get involved in the 'A Better Choice' initiative:

Getting outdoors

Keep active while doing your part to help the environment. Friends of the Escarpment Parks offers an eight week Eco Gym program which consists of bushland conservation activities designed to introduce new volunteers to techniques that help native plants and animals to thrive in their natural environment. A variety of activities are available to suit people of various ages, fitness levels, abilities and interests.

Free community bushwalking program 

The Toowoomba Bushwalkers Club provided a terrific program offering local residents the opportunity to give bushwalking a go in their free beginner friendly program run under the Change Project. Although the program has finished now, if this is something you would love to see run again please get in touch with the Toowoomba Bushwalking Club direct on the details listed on their website.
