Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is inviting the community to have their say on a revitalised art museum to update or replace the existing Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery.

“As part of this exciting project, Council is hosting community workshops in Toowoomba and Pittsworth, along with an online session, to gather ideas, insights and inspiration,” TRC Library and Cultural Services portfolio spokesperson Cr Melissa Taylor said.

“Your feedback will help shape the future direction of the Region’s premier art and cultural destination.

“Most importantly, we want to hear from as many people as possible – no matter where you are.”

Cr Taylor said community input would play a crucial role in developing a business case for the project, which was being prepared in partnership with Simon McArthur and Associates (SMA Tourism).

“Whether you attend a workshop, join the online session, or complete the survey – every idea counts,” Cr Taylor said.

“We’re asking the community to think boldly and share what a vibrant, inclusive and inspiring art museum might look like for our Region.”

Toowoomba: Tuesday, April 29, 2025, 5.30pm – 7.30pm at the Community Venues, Level 3, Toowoomba City Library;

Pittsworth: Wednesday, April 30, 2025, 10am – noon at the Pittsworth Function Centre, 42 Hume Street, Pittsworth.

Feedback will be gathered across five key themes:
• The essence of an art gallery,
• Connecting people and art,
• Exhibitions and experiences,
• Experiencing the collections, and
• Art museum and surrounds.

“These themes help participants consider what draws them to galleries and the kinds of experiences they remember and value,” Cr Taylor said.

“This project follows Council’s October 2023 resolution to explore options for updating or replacing the current gallery.

“In October 2024, SMA Tourism was awarded the contract to prepare the business case.

“Invitations have also been sent to local arts and cultural organisations that have been involved in the process so far, but everyone is encouraged to contribute ideas.

“Opened in 1937, the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery is the oldest public art gallery in regional Queensland.

“Now is the time to imagine how it can evolve to inspire generations to come.”
