Toowoomba Regional Council, in conjunction with the Queensland Government, is constructing a cycleway (shared pathway) linking South Street to Pierce Street. The cycleway will complete the north-south active transport missing link along the West Creek corridor. It is designed to provide a safe path for cyclists and pedestrians through a “green corridor” and will run along the eastern boundary of the golf course from South Street (near Healy Street), behind Winifred Street, across the top of Morton Street, to Pierce Street.
The cycleway will be constructed as a shared path with the width varying from three to four metres wide. Cyclists will share the path with pedestrians for the entire length. To improve personal safety and accessibility, it will be fully fenced with pedestrian entry and exit points leading on to the golf course at several locations along the cycleway as well as bollard lighting to improve visibility and safety at night.
As part of the project, Council will also install new stormwater drainage from Winifred Street to South Street, to greatly increase the capacity of drainage within this area.
Improving and developing cycleway networks are part of Council’s Sustainable Transport Strategy. This cycleway will form a key link for our principal cycleway network and will be a jointly funded project with the Queensland Government as part of its Cycle Network Local Government Grants program.
